Regent Theater

When it comes to historic and legendary venues, you can’t think of any better than The Regent Theater.

History

This venue first opened in 1914 as The National, where it catered to the biggest theater lovers in the country. Then, after three short years, it changed its name to The Regent as everyone calls it today.

For a time, the venue existed as a grindhouse and adult movie venue for many years until it closed in 2000. After that closure, it lay dormant for several years waiting for its big chance to return to the national venue stage. And that opportunity came six years later when developer Tom Gilmore acquired the property.

Gilmore used the property as an art and performance space for the monthly Thursday night ‘Downtown Art Walk’. At the time, the venue was known for its sloped floor, proscenium archway, and it’s incredible gothic-inspired ceiling. All this and more made it a true relic especially as it became the last remaining historic movie theater on Downtown LA’s Main STreet.

But then, music promoter Mitchell Frank, along with Artist and Recreation, LLC and Knitting Factory Entertainment, Inc. took over the lease in 2012. They worked together to restore the venue to its former glory.

The Regent Theater Today

Their improvements included updates on all interiors, a second story mezzanine, a pizzeria, and a bar. This made the aging theater feel like new again, with brand new work that highlighted the very best of modern theater design.

Today, The Regent Theater is proud to host concerts, themed dance nights, theater performances, movie screenings, special events, parties, and even festivals. This makes it one of the most happening spots on the LA concert venue scene as every month is chock full of incredible shows and events.
